VOICES Radio Hour

VOICES Radio Hour | a collaboration with Circa 71 Productions

2nd Friday of The Month, 6-7pm on KDNK Radio

VOICES Radio Hour is a response to our intrinsic need to share stories, coupling with Circa 71 Productions’ mission to preserve memories and stories as the sacred archeology of our loved ones. The collaboration brings about collected stories under different themes and voices from all walks of our community in the monthly VOICES Radio Hour. We hope this serves to preserve our oral history of who we are, where we come from, and who we aspire to be, through the tradition of storytelling.

Episode 16. New Motherhood

May 10 , 6-7pm

This month on VOICES Radio Hour, we hear from four new mothers with babies ranging from 7 weeks to 19 months old, and one expectant mother. They share about the wonder, overwhelm, and gratitude they’ve felt, their birth experiences, postpartum surprises, the ways in which their community has shown up for them, and their hopes for the future. Listen close to hear one of the sweet babies sharing their thoughts and feelings as well!

To all mothers and mother-figures everywhere: You are incredible. You are powerful. You are inspiring. We love you and are so grateful for you. Happy Mother’s Day from VOICES.

Today’s episode features the voices of Marlin Gonzalez, Lindsay Gurley, Emma Leake-Parker, Sonya Meyer-Schaffer, and Claire Wright.

Featured musical selections in this episode are chosen by each of the mothers. They are songs that are inspiring and empowering to them in motherhood or songs that have taken on special meaning for them as they raise their babies.

About The Storytellers

STORYTELLER | MARLIN GONZALEZ is originally from the Dominican Republic. She arrived in the valley 4 years ago with her husband and manages Valley Settlement's adult-focused programs. Marlin found her passion for community service back home in her community working for local organizations in education and community development. Marlin loves to be outdoors and go on adventures with her husband and dog.

STORYTELLER | LINDSAY GURLEY is a new mama to her 9 month old little man, Finn, and her two pups in partnership with her husband Sam. She gets to live her passion through her work as a professional life and leadership coach. Motherhood has been the most epic journey of her life so far, beating out the many outdoor adventures (that were amazing!) in the past three decades of her life.

STORYTELLER | EMMA LEAKE-PARKER, a native Coloradan, moved to Glenwood Springs ten years ago to begin teaching elementary music. She met her now husband within a day of moving to the Valley. Over the years they have enjoyed many adventures together, including getting lost while backpacking, challenging each other on the ski hill, finding new places to camp, and raising two loving pups. Emma’s newest adventure is the lifelong journey into motherhood.

STORYTELLER | SONYA MEYER-SCHAFFER is an actor, singer, director and speech coach. Sonya is proud of her two solo cabarets “A Day of Sky” and “Wildflower Woman”. She has performed everywhere from cruises, to comedy, from opera to TV. In winter you’ll find her teaching skiing for Aspen Skico. She regularly directs and choreographs for BHS, RFHS, SoL Theatre and Theatre Aspen. Don’t miss her in POTUS at TRTC in June!

STORYTELLER | CLAIRE WRIGHT is a mermaid from the desert who wears many hats: a business owner, mother, wife, sister, daughter, friend, gardener, teacher, student…you get the idea.  She is very passionate about sustainability, community, and doing her part in being the best version of herself in order to be a healthy part of the “whole”. She is not a human being, she is a human becoming.
